Autumn Adventures in CLE: Outdoor Things to Do in Cleveland This Fall

_____________________________________________________________________________

Cleveland in the fall is a quiet kind of magic. The air turns crisp, the leaves blaze in gold and crimson, and there’s something deeply satisfying about getting outside before the snow flies. Here are some favorite ways to soak up autumn in “The Land.”

1. Chase the foliage: parks, reservations & scenic drives

  • The Metroparks Emerald Necklace is a classic for a reason — winding trails, scenic overlooks, and forested corridors.

  • Cuyahoga Valley National Park is a must. Hike the Ledges Trail, ride or walk the Towpath Trail, or take one of their special “Fall Flyer” train routes.

  • Rocky River Reservation / Berea Falls Scenic Overlook offers a mellow escape that’s still within reach of the city.

  • Holden Arboretum is extra special in autumn — the canopy walk and emergent tower give you a treetop view of the color show.

Tip: Peak leaf-peeping is usually mid-October in our area, but local conditions (rain, early frost) can shift things.

2. Bike, run, or stroll the trails

  • The Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail is especially lovely now — flatter ground, gentle gradients, and miles of wooded scenery.

  • For more urban + water views, try a route from Edgewater Park through Rocky River Reservation along the lake.

  • Want a challenge? Sign up for a fall 5K, half marathon, or trail run. Many local races take advantage of cooler temps this time of year.

3. Pick-your-own & farm fun

  • Mapleside Farms transforms into a “Pumpkin Village” in the fall — with hayrides, a giant corn maze, pumpkins, cider donuts, etc

  • Local orchards let you pick apples, pumpkins, or wander corn mazes. It’s a seasonal staple.

  • Metroparks often host fall events: harvest festivals, guided nature walks, and even “haunted” or spooky tours.

4. Head off the beaten path

  • Lake View Cemetery (especially near University Circle) becomes peaceful and beautiful in autumn. Several visitors recommend it for fall walks.

  • For a scenic drive, loop through the suburban roads that pass park reserves and river valleys — sometimes less crowded but just as beautiful.

  • If you’re up for a short day trip, check out nearby state parks or forest preserves just beyond the metro area. The change in elevation often gives a subtler, later-changing color display.

5. Pair nature with cozy pauses

  • Bring a thermos of coffee or cider and stop at overlooks or along trails to just sit and soak in the moment.

  • Photography is spectacular this time of year: early morning mist, golden light, reflections in creeks.

  • Try to time a sunset walk — the low-angle light makes colors pop.
