Interviewed and written by: Belle Mercurio, Marketing & Communications Manager for Engage! Cleveland
Have you ever been in the room when a negative comment leaves someone else’s lips sounding like, “Cleveland is the mistake on the Lake,” or “There is really nothing special about Cleveland”?
Hurts your heart a bit, right?
At Engage! Cleveland, we know the importance of celebrating our city—and how a strong reputation can drive the attraction and retention of the next generation of Clevelanders.
According to the 2023 State of the Young Professional Community Report (SYPCR), a survey we conduct bi-annually to get a finger on the pulse of the early to mid-career professional community in Cleveland, a whopping 91% of respondents had a positive view of Cleveland. However, only 27% considered themselves “cheerleaders” of the city, with the rest identifying as passive or even negative.
That’s why, since the beginning of the year, we’ve been highlighting local influencers who actively champion Cleveland—people using their platforms, passions, and voices to reshape the narrative and showcase all that makes this city exceptional.
Each month, we shine a spotlight on an individual who inspires us, and this month’s feature is local legend Stefan Johnson. King of the voice-over and epic food review, Stefan brings pizzazz to every interaction he makes in his career.
Stay tuned as we continue honoring these individuals and sharing their stories. Read on to learn more about Stefan and follow his journey on social media.
EC: Do you currently work and/or live in Cleveland?
SJ: Yes!
EC: How long have you lived in Cleveland?
SJ: My entire life.
EC: How would you describe yourself? A Cleveland transplant, boomerang, or life-long resident.
SJ: Cleveland Lifer!
EC: What is it about Cleveland that makes you feel at home here, and why do you choose to live in this city over other places?
SJ: The people of Cleveland are truly unlike any other people you’re gonna find in the country. A great mix of wholesomeness with a little bit of grit. And also every professional industry is on the rise in the city.
EC: Can you describe your favorite neighborhood or area in Cleveland? What makes it special to you, and how does it reflect your connection to the city?
SJ: I’m a big fan of the Coventry area. From the music venues to the cool spots to eat. Even the little funky shops to grab clothes and other knick-knacks. It’s a fun spot to tour.
EC: Cleveland has a rich history and culture. What part of the city’s history or culture do you connect with most, and how does that shape your view of Cleveland today?
SJ: I’d have to say, I connect with the history of my old neighborhood, Hough, more than anything. It’s an urban area with a pretty rocky past, but it’s on the rise and beautiful things have come from the neighborhood. I’d like to think I see a little bit of myself in the neighborhood.
EC: What are some of your favorite places to visit in Cleveland, whether for leisure, food, or entertainment? Why do these spots stand out to you?
SJ: I like the people watch at Edgewater, but I also like to work out over at Euclid Creek. But, if I’m gonna go get a bite to eat, you can never go wrong with Lakewood.
EC: If you’ve lived in other cities, how does Cleveland compare? Are there specific aspects of Cleveland that you think are better or unique compared to those places?
SJ: I’ve never lived in other cities, but I visit a different city every month for content creation. And Cleveland just seems to have a bit more balance than other cities. Most cities seem to be either completely urban or completely suburban or completely country. But in Cleveland, you get a great mix of all three literally within the span of a few miles most times.
EC: Cleveland has a passionate sports community. How does being a fan of Cleveland’s sports teams (or the city’s overall sports culture) enhance your experience of the city?
SJ: Being a Cleveland sports fan gives you thick skin. Point blank.
EC: How do you typically spend a weekend in Cleveland? Are there any local events or activities that you never miss?
SJ: Being a musician, I always try to make it out to a music venue whenever possible. I personally know a lot of very talented world-class, musicians, and they have a show in the city almost every day, let alone every weekend. You have to take advantage of that.
EC: What would you say to someone who is thinking about moving to Cleveland? What do you think they should know about the city and its people before making the move?
SJ: There’s literally something here for everybody. Whether it be Michelin star food, some of the most rowdy sports experiences you’ll find in the country, again, world-class music, or a vibrant arts and theater scene. Cleveland has it all.
EC: In what ways do you celebrate Cleveland—whether through its festivals, local businesses, or other cultural traditions? What’s your personal way of showing love for the city?
SJ: Being a content creator I try to show off my city as much as possible. Me living in the food space online, I feel like Cleveland is very underappreciated, and I do my best to show the world with Cleveland has to offer.
EC: Please detail your current efforts in making Cleveland great. Whether this is in your personal or professional life.
SJ: Doing everything I can to shine a light on the Cleveland culinary scene.
EC: What are some ways our audience can engage with you or your work?
SJ: Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and TikTok. I appreciate the love, @s_johnson_voiceovers
