Celebrating Clevelanders: A Spotlight on the People Making Cleveland Great

Have you ever been in the room when a negative comment leaves someone else’s lips sounding like, “Cleveland is the mistake on the Lake,” or “There is really nothing special about Cleveland”?

Hurts your heart a bit, right?

At Engage! Cleveland, we know the importance of celebrating our city—and how a strong reputation can drive the attraction and retention of the next generation of Clevelanders.

According to the 2023 State of the Young Professional Community Report (SYPCR), a survey we conduct bi-annually to get a finger on the pulse of the early to mid-career professional community in Cleveland, a whopping 91% of respondents had a positive view of Cleveland. However, only 27% considered themselves “cheerleaders” of the city, with the rest identifying as passive or even negative.

That’s why, since the beginning of the year, we’ve been highlighting local influencers who actively champion Cleveland—people using their platforms, passions, and voices to reshape the narrative and showcase all that makes this city exceptional.

Each month, we shine a spotlight on an individual who inspires us, and this month’s feature is none other than the Season 17 winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Onya Nerve. A dynamic performer and proud Clevelander, Onya is not only elevating the art of drag but also putting Cleveland’s creativity and spirit in the national spotlight.
Stay tuned as we continue honoring these individuals and sharing their stories. Read on to learn more about Onya and follow their journey on social media.

EC: Before we dive into our Cleveland-focused questions, we have to ask: How does it feel to be a winner baby!?

ON: It feels really good. You know, getting on Drag Race was the ultimate goal when I started this art form four years ago. So to win, and be the first winner from Cleveland, Ohio, It’s truly a dream and I’m very grateful. It’s so corny to say but with great power comes great responsibility. That’s what it feels like to be a winner. And I’m honored to be a leader of many in this art form we call drag.

EC: Do you currently work and/or live in Cleveland?
ON: Yes! I do live in Cleveland and I absolutely love it here. I reside on the east side of Cleveland.

EC: How long have you lived in Cleveland?
ON: I’ve lived in Cleveland for about 10 years now. Since 2011. I moved back to Canton once or twice, but just about 10 years.

EC: How would you describe yourself? A Cleveland transplant, boomerang, or life-long resident.
ON: Well I’ve lived in Northeast Ohio my whole life and I do really love it here. The people, the 4 seasons, and the cost of living. I’d love to venture out eventually but, Cleveland and Canton will always be home.

EC: What is it about Cleveland that makes you feel at home here, and why do you choose to live in this city over other places?
ON: I mean, I went to college here. It’s where I feel like I grew into myself, and met friends that I’m still in touch with today. And Cleveland just has a vibe to it that like no other place.

EC: Can you describe your favorite neighborhood or area in Cleveland? What makes it special to you, and how does it reflect your connection to the city?
ON: Absolutely! My favorite place in Cleveland would have to be the Waterloo Arts District. It’s where I live, and it’s where I feel like I developed a real community and connection with the people that live and work there. While working in my drag career, I had the pleasure of working at Six Shooter coffee shop, Doinks Burger Joint, and I don’t think I would be as successful today if it weren’t for their continuous love and support.

EC: Cleveland has a rich history and culture. What part of the city’s history or culture do you connect with most, and how does that shape your view of Cleveland today?
ON: I think the part of Cleveland’s history that connects with the most would have to be the Karamu House Theatre. It’s one of the theaters that I’ve had the pleasure of working at and happens to be the oldest producing Black theaters in the US!! Notables of Karamu House include not only playwright Langston Hughes, but also authors Zora Neale Hurston and Lorraine Hansberry. Other Karamu House alumni who have distinguished themselves on stage and screen include: Ruby Dee, Robert Guillaume, Ron O’Neal, Bill Cobbs, and Ivan Dixon.

EC: What are some of your favorite places to visit in Cleveland, whether for leisure, food, or entertainment? Why do these spots stand out to you?
ON: Well, right off the bat, I have to say Doinks Burger Joint and Six Shooter coffee shop, but all of the metro parks are also awesome and I love going to Asia town with my partner.

EC: Cleveland has a passionate sports community. How does being a fan of Cleveland’s sports teams (or the city’s overall sports culture) enhance your experience of the city?
ON: I’m a born and raised Browns fan for sure, and not a huge sports fan, but growing up here and experiencing the pure passion we have for all of our teams just lets me know what type of people we are here. And I like that. We win together and we lose together.

EC: How do you typically spend a weekend in Cleveland? Are there any local events or activities that you never miss?
ON: Back in the day, my dad, grandma, and I would always go to the Jazz Fest every year, but when I’m not doing drag I love just chilling at home with my cats, watching tv, and relaxing. I love going to the gym or going on walks too!

EC: How does your recent win on RuPaul’s Drag Race impact your career in Cleveland? Have you noticed an increase in local support since your win?
ON: The city has always supported me before, during, and after Drag Race. Providing me a space to perform, buying and selling my merch, and also just giving me a place to feel at home. I just hope to one day give back to Cleveland what the city has done for me.

EC: What would you say to someone who is thinking about moving to Cleveland? What do you think they should know about the city and its people before making the move?
ON: I would tell them that no matter what, make sure you find a community of people who love you unconditionally, no matter where you are in the world, the people around you make it all the better. And I would tell them that it’s pretty cheap to live here too!!

EC: In what ways do you celebrate Cleveland—whether through its festivals, local businesses, or other cultural traditions? What’s your personal way of showing love for the city?
ON: Definitely through supporting local businesses! And I do that on a daily basis! Even with my drag, I’m constantly working with local artists, hair stylists, nail artists, and costume designers as much as I can!

EC: Please detail your current efforts in making Cleveland great. Whether this is in your personal or professional life.
ON: I am proof that hard work pays off, and I always want to continue to inspire young black kids and all kids to follow their dreams. This city is full of so much talent and I want to continue to inspire the greatest we possess.

EC: What are some ways our audience can engage with you or your work?
ON: I will continue to list show flyers and tour dates so hopefully I’m in a city near you!! Follow me online: @onyanurve!
