Playhouse Square is a vibrant theater district in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, renowned for being the largest performing arts center in the United States outside of New York City. It comprises five historic theaters – the State, Ohio, Hanna, Allen, and Palace – constructed in the 1920s within a two-block radius. These grand venues, initially showcasing movies, vaudeville, and live theater, faced decline and potential demolition by the 1960s due to the rise of television and suburbanization.
However, a grassroots movement emerged in the 1970s to save and revitalize the theaters, leading to their successful renovation and restoration. Today, Playhouse Square attracts over a million visitors annually to enjoy a diverse array of performances, including Broadway shows, concerts, dance, comedy, opera, and children’s programming. The district is managed by the Playhouse Square Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to presenting quality performing arts and driving urban renewal in Cleveland.
