Assistant Director of Alumni Communications & Engagement – Oberlin College

Job Summary
The Office of Alumni Engagement at Oberlin College and Conservatory seeks applicants for the position of Assistant Director of Alumni Communications and Engagement. This is a full-time, 12-month, Administrative and Professional Staff position in the Office of Advancement, reporting to the Director of Reunion and Regional Activities.
Responsibilities
The Assistant Director of Alumni Communications and Engagement provides important programmatic and communications support, as well as project leadership, for Oberlin College and Conservatory in support of its efforts to strengthen the college for both current and future students, as well as to provide meaningful and positive lifelong connection opportunities for members of Oberlin’s nearly 42,000-member alumni community.
Primary responsibilities for the Assistant Director fall into three distinct and interrelated areas: general alumni communications and website oversight; reunion and event support; and young alumni communications and engagement support (including student-to-alumni transition initiatives).
Essential Job Functions
Communications and Website Management
    • Serve as lead creator of alumni communications and online event registrations using broadcast email tools, mailings, event registration tools, and social media.
    • Manage the Office of Alumni Engagement suite of webpages.
    • Manage the Office of Alumni Engagement outbound communications calendar.
    • Produce Oberlin’s monthly electronic alumni newsletter, Around the Square, in coordination with the Office of Communications. Work will include developing Advancement goals for the piece and an annual plan for Advancement messaging and reader calls to action.
    • Work with the Office of Communications to enhance Oberlin’s social media presence to help support and achieve alumni engagement goals.

 

Reunion and Event Support
  • Create and implement reunion communications and tools for reunion committees and attendees.
  • Assist in the planning, implementation, and staffing of annual reunion activities that take place during Commencement and Homecoming weekends.
Young Alumni Communications and Support
  • Work with other members of the Alumni Engagement team to develop and implement young alumni engagement communications and programs, with an emphasis on the student-to-young alumni transition.
  • Assist in goal-setting for young alumni engagement.
  • Initiate and assist in the planning of young alumni activities in both virtual and in-person formats. This work will occasionally involve creating, managing, and executing programs; in other instances, it will involve working with other team members on programs they manage to create activities with a focus on young alumni.
  • Coordinate with the Office of Annual Giving to ensure Alumni Engagement student-to-alumni and young alumni activities, including student philanthropy, align.
  • Measure and report on results.
Marginal Job Functions
  • Staff and support key initiatives of the Office of Alumni Engagement, including Commencement and Milestone Reunion Weekend, Homecoming, All In For Oberlin (annual day of giving).
  • Assist other Alumni Engagement colleagues as they manage programs, alumni, and volunteer groups.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and an ability to motivate others.
  • Initiative and creativity.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and complex projects in a team-oriented environment.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Flexible schedule to permit occasional evening and weekend hours.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of and experience with content management and database management systems, broadcast email software
  • Ability to write in different voices that resonate with varied audiences
  • Experience with multiple social media platforms
