Lower School – First Grade Assistant Teacher

THE POSITION
Under the direction of the First Grade Lead Teacher, the Assistant Teacher supports all first grade students and teachers, collaborating to provide high-quality learning experiences. This role, limited to no more than two years, aims to prepare individuals to become Lead Teachers at Hawken.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Classroom Support: Assist with lesson whole group delivery and preparation, lead small groups, and help manage materials
- Recess and Lunch Support: Assist first grade team and students with supplemental recess and lunch supervision
- Positive Environment: Foster engagement and respect, support behavior management through appropriate teacher language, understanding of child development, and meaningful relationships with students and adults
- Individual Support: Provide one-on-one assistance and adapt materials for diverse needs, under the direction of the first grade teachers
- Collaboration: Work with teachers to participate in conferences and meetings as required
- Administration: Help with organization, prepare materials, and assist in school-wide activities
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in education preferred
- Experience or interest in Responsive Classroom and project-based learning
- Effective with elementary learners’ developmental needs
- Enthusiastic about school life and collaboration
- Joyful, flexible, and creative
