Staff Accountant – Lake Erie College

Lake Erie College, a small, co-educational, four-year, independent liberal arts college located in Painesville, OH, 30 miles east of Cleveland, invites applications for the full/part-time position of  The senior accountant assists the controller by overseeing the accounts payable function, fixed asset accounting and by maintaining the general ledger as well as providing analytical support.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Accounts Payable

  • Oversees timely processing of vendor invoices, check requests and travel reimbursement documents by assisting in the weekly determination of invoices to be paid.
  • Verifies that all disbursements are adequately documented, goods and services have been received/rendered and have appropriate approval by the department heads and/or vice presidents, as required.
  • Assists accounts payable staff with resolving payment and vendor issues as needed.

 

Payroll

  • Prepares all employer-paid benefit entries, including retirement contributions, health insurance, short-term and long-term disability insurance and life insurance.  Ensures all employee benefit costs are recorded in the general ledger in a timely manner.

 

Property accounting

  • Maintains the fixed asset module, which involves monitoring the general ledger for any additions and dispositions, communicating with directors and managers regarding capital purchases, capturing information and entering it into the fixed asset module, calculating depreciation and preparing analysis which tests the reasonableness of depreciation.  It also requires producing quarterly and annual reports and schedules and reconciling general ledger balances with balances maintained in the fixed asset module.
  • Reviews and analyzes repairs and maintenance to ensure proper accounting treatments.

 

General Accounting

  • Provides accounting software assistance to co-workers as it pertains both to use of the general ledger and financial reporting modules.
  • Prepares journal entries as needed monthly, quarterly and at year-end.
  • Assists with year-end review and entry of accruals, prepaid expenses and miscellaneous receivables.
  • Prepares financial schedules/reports as needed.

Page Two – Senior Accountant

 

  • Provides analytical support, including generating, reviewing, analyzing and communicating financial data that reflects actual financial performance, when requested.
  • Assists with budget preparation documents for Institutional Advancement and other areas on campus.
  • Assists controller and external auditors as needed during the annual financial audit.
  • Assists the controller with reconciliation of balance sheet accounts.
  • Performs various income and expense reconciliations.
  • Provides financial and program analysis as needed.
  • Monthly, quarterly, yearly or on-demand general ledger reports for internal and externally funded grants/contracts.
  • Recommends changes to policies and procedures to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the accounting office.
  • Ensures compliance with college policies and procedures, county, state and federal regulations, as well as accreditation requirements.
  • Maintains and manages the VISA corporate card program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the controller.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or related field.
  • Five or more years of professional accounting experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, detail-oriented, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team, as well as across academic and administrative departments.
  • Able to maintain strict confidentiality and professional conduct.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and excellent skill with Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience in educational/not-for-profit fund accounting.
  • Experience with Jenzabar EX software system.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, detail-oriented, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team, as well as across academic and administrative departments.
  • Able to maintain strict confidentiality and professional conduct.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and excellent skill with Microsoft Excel.
  • Growth and “doer” mindset and institutional teamwork ethic.
  • Creative, strategic, thoughtful, and has a sense of humor.
