STEM Specialist – Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio

The STEM Specialist is a casual part-time, as needed position that facilitates program sessions to youth in grades K-12. STEM Specialists work in partnership with the Girl Experience Department, volunteers, and staff to implement and oversee the delivery of high quality, technical STEM program experiences. Specialists also assist with the collection and tracking of necessary program documentation and evaluation pieces as required by the program.

 

Program needs are posted on a session-by-session basis. STEM Specialists can sign up to work the shifts that they are qualified for and that fit their schedules up to 20 hours per week.

 

Most STEM programs will fall into one of the following categories:

 

• Field Trips- Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 9am-4pm.

• Weekend Workshops- Saturday or Sundays from within the window of 10am – 4pm.

• Evening Experiences- Tuesday-Saturday within the window of 5pm-9pm.

Most STEM programs will take place at one of these locations:

• GSNEO STEM Center of Excellence, 7047 Akron Peninsula Rd, Peninsula.

• Girl Scout DreamLab, 5255 Detroit Rd, Sheffield, OH 44054

1. Implement high-level, technical STEM programs throughout the GSNEO council jurisdiction, including by not limited to Girl Scout members and school aged children.

2. Uses contemporary Girl Scout program content to deliver STEM programs in a variety of settings, including troop support, special events, virtual program, and camp.

3. Trains on and utilizes special STEM-related equipment; 3D printers, laser and vinyl cutters, power tools, telescopes, electronics, robots, coding tools, biology and chemistry equipment, etc.

4. Works closely with the Director of STEM Experience, STEM Coordinator, and DreamLab Coordinator to ensure correct implementation of programming and grant management.

5. Maintain inventory of program supplies and equipment, including order placement, delivery to program sites, and routine maintenance.

6. Record and report data on attendance and programmatic outcomes as required.

7. Additional responsibilities as assigned by management

 

Requirements

– Formal STEM Education and/or a combination of work-related experience of 2-4 years.

– Record of successful youth program facilitation preferred.

– Computer literacy and technical knowledge of software programs such as Microsoft Office suite.

– Experience in at least one of the following areas:

 

  • Digital Fabrication– 3D printing, laser cutting, vinyl cutting, cnc routers, etc. and relevant software
  • Robotics and Coding– Lego Robotics, Sphero, DoBot, MakeyMakey, Microbit, Arduino, etc.
  • Electronics – paper circuits, simple circuits, soldering, etc.
  • Engineering– building bridges, towers, wind turbines, etc.
  • Astronomy– Telescopes, Star Lab, etc.
  • Ecology- nature and environmental programs and projects.
  • Sciences– Hands on experiments in Biology and/or Chemistry.
  • Woodworking – power tools, design, etc.
  • Maker/STEAM – button making, sticker printing, tie dye, book binding, etc.
