Upper School Humanities & Interdisciplinary Studies Teacher – Hawken School

THE POSITION

At Hawken, embracing opportunities that move beyond traditional disciplines is central to our commitment to preparing students for the complexity of the world today. To this end, we are seeking an enthusiastic interdisciplinary educator to join our team for the 2025-2026 school year. This full-time position combines teaching in our Humanities department and one or more other disciplines at our school.

The ideal candidate will be adept at facilitating inquiry-based, discussion-rich, project-based learning. This faculty member will be committed to fostering a caring and inclusive community in their classroom, and will be passionate about creating engaging and relevant learning opportunities that center student agency, ownership, and leadership.

An ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about teaching students in grades 9-12, and will be equally confident teaching core courses in the Humanities (whether English or History or both), as well as elective offerings in at least one other discipline (arts, science, math, world language, etc.). Additionally, this teacher will be eager to collaborate with students and colleagues to co-create relevant, interdisciplinary learning experiences that bring the world into the classroom and bring students out into the world beyond our campus.

We are seeking teachers who bring with them a healthy combination of flexibility, energy, teamwork, humility, creativity, and passion for education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach at least one course in Humanities, English, or History, plus have the ability to teach at least one course in another discipline
  • Design and lead interdisciplinary Intensives – All-day, 3-week classes in December and/or May focused on one compelling topic, challenge, or project. (e.g., Podcast This!, Bioethics, Hawken M.D., What is Truth?, Urban Studies, Walt Disney Imagineering, National Parks, Forensic Files, Roller Coaster Physics, So You Want to Make an Indie Film, etc.)
  • Collaborate with colleagues to design and refine curricula to make learning more purposeful, project-based, connected to students’ interests and aspirations, and connected to the world beyond the classroom
  • Coach or lead a signature co-curricular: priority will go to candidates with experience and/or interest in any of the following: Speech and Debate Coaching, Athletics Coaching, Robotics Coaching, Yearbook Advising, Student Success Coaching (support for students with learning differences), Community Service Coordinating, and Scheduling Guidance/College Advising
  • Serve as an Advisor to a group of 9-12 students within our Advisory System
  • Perform other non-teaching duties as assigned by the Upper School Director

QUALIFICATIONS

  • An undergraduate degree in a Humanities or STEAM field with experience teaching courses in more than one academic discipline or in an interdisciplinary context
  • An advanced degree and three years of teaching experience is preferred
  • Familiarity with supporting students with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and/or skills with learning deeply
  • A passion for creative/collaborative design of unique learning experiences in and out of the classroom
  • A commitment to improve and evolve your teaching practice to better reach the students we serve in any given course and year
  • A deep understanding of adolescence and a passion for working with teenagers as they engage the complex issues of today’s world

Hawken School is a coeducational independent day school with 1,600 students in toddler through grade 12.
