Instructional Responsibilities:

  • Teach four sections of math courses according to school needs, including Algebra 1. Interest in designing and teaching coursework in Applied Statistics and/or Computational Thinking is a plus.
  • Support math students in constructing deep conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and problem solving skills by facilitating productive struggle and mathematical discourse.
  • Utilize feedback-based assessment aligned with clearly articulated learning standards.
  • Co-design interdisciplinary learning opportunities with students and colleagues that are beyond the traditional boundaries of mathematics study.
  • Coach or lead significant co-curricular activities within the Upper School.
  • Advise a group of 10-12 students.
  • Be available on a regular basis for offering extra help in subject areas of expertise.
  • Perform other non-teaching duties as assigned by the Upper School director or head of school.
  • Use technology as appropriate to support student engagement, including Canvas (learning management system) and Microsoft Outlook, and perhaps Microsoft OneNote, Desmos, TI-NSpire handheld calculators, and other useful resources.

Because Hawken believes in supporting teachers’ passions, in deepening their expertise, and in fueling their spirit of innovation, we provide substantive professional development opportunities that lead to the kinds of excellence that are a hallmark of our community.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics or related field required; Masters and at least 3-5 years of teaching experience preferred;
  • Joyful enthusiasm, flexibility, good humor, and a team spirit necessary for curricular collaboration and innovation;
  • A deep understanding of adolescence and a passion for working with teenagers as they engage the complex issues of today’s world;
  • Familiarity with diverse ways of engaging students with a range of learning needs, enhanced by a desire to try new approaches;
  • A passion for creatively designing unique programing within our department and across disciplines to support curriculum that encompasses interdisciplinary approaches, multicultural perspectives, and experiential opportunities in and out of the classroom;
  • A continuous commitment to improve teaching proficiency;
  • Knowledge about, or openness to, approaches to math pedagogy that prioritize students’ construction of deep and robust conceptual understanding through productive struggle and mathematical discourse.
