JOB SUMMARY

An internship designed to provide on-the-job training and experience for entry-level to intermediate-level professionals. Engaging in various work assignments, projects, and activities of varying complexity, Our structure will enable the intern to gain the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform at a professional level area of focus. All interns will receive training and development in planning and carrying out activities and assignments. Projects vary per department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

– Must be able to attend all development opportunities.
– Must participate in all projects and programs designed to develop professional skills and expertise appropriate to the needs of the department.
– Must complete and document assigned project task.
– Observe and follow all organizational procedures, policies, and regulations.
– Must participate in weekly supervision with department supervisor.

You will be assigned and evaluated on a number of projects, including but not limited to:

1) Project Title: Conduct Daily Beach Monitoring

2) Project Title: Assist with Environmental Assessment Investigations and Water Quality Monitoring

3) Project Title: Assist with Business Inspections and Wastewater Monitoring

4) Project Title: Assist with Dental/Hospital Facility Inspections and Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination Monitoring

5) Project Title: Assist with Industrial Facility Inspections and Wastewater Monitoring

6) Project Title: Equipment cleaning and maintenance

7) Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

Declared Majors: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering/Science, or closely related field of study

  • Required Qualifications:
    • Candidate must possess a valid driver’s license with a driving record in accordance with the District’s acceptable guidelines.
    • Candidate must be enrolled in college or must have graduated within 24 months from the date of application.
  • Availability:
    • Candidate must be able to work 40 hours per week. Working hours are Monday through Friday; Required to work a rotational schedule including weekend and holiday hours as needed.
    • Candidate must be able to commit 4 or 9 months, depending on assignment, with an option to extend the assignment at NEORSD’s discretion. This internship program provides for a time-limited role at NEORSD with no express or implied guarantee of future employment beyond the assignment period. This position is governed by all applicable NEORSD administrative policies, practices and procedures related to temporary employees.
  • The Sewer District requires protective footwear (i.e., steel or composite-toed) when working in the plants, pump stations, construction sites, public rights-of-way and other posted areas. New hires are required to have protective footwear, meeting the following criteria, on the first day of employment:
    o 1) Must be ANSI Z41-1999 or ASTM F-2412/2413 (2005) certified,
    o 2) Must have a steel or composite protective toe,
    o 3) Must be, at a minimum, a 6” work boot or 6” hiker-style boot (Note: shoes are not permitted)
    o 4) Must have a slip-resistant sole. It is also recommended, but not required, that footwear be waterproof and have included a shank to protect the bottom of the foot.
