How would you describe your culture?

Bessemer Management is a transportation organization comprised of a family of 5 logistics/trucking companies with 90+ years of experience operating in multi-faceted transportation modes. We are a dynamic and growing organization, building and utilizing best-in-industry technology.

The first of our companies, Kaplan Trucking, was incorporated in 1934 as a flatbed steel hauler. However, we manage several different types of trucking operations (flatbed, intermodal, and over-dimensional trucking), so we are a stable, diversified business. And, unlike many trucking companies that are publicly-traded or owned by private equity, we are proud to be an independent company.

We’re not perfect, but we do our best to take care of our employees. We value our employees’ experience and knowledge – it’s in large part due to their efforts that we’ve enjoyed the success we have for so many years. We also remain true to our roots and are intentional about not sacrificing our culture simply for the sake of growth. Even though we are a large company that enjoys the benefits of a larger operation, we are not “corporate” and never intend to be. In addition, we have a “roll up our sleeves” mentality. We work hard, but we do it together and make sure to find ways to still have fun and celebrate our successes and each other.

What is your mission and vision?

Rather than traditional mission, vision, and/or values statements, we have what we call our “cultural philosophies”:

1. We’re a professionally managed business that hasn’t lost sight of its family roots.

2. All stakeholders (especially our truck drivers) must always be supported and treated with respect. We have to actively aid in their success – they are our partners – we only succeed when they succeed.

3. No one person is bigger or more important than anyone else, regardless of their title.

4. We should never lose sight of our core business functions regarding how they co-exist and weave into our success as a company.

5. We need to keep doing what we’re doing, grow organically when possible, and not sacrifice long-term success for short-term or individual gain.

6. We must continue to invest in new programs and tools for our stakeholders.

7. We need to continue accepting change as a constant, always be open to new ideas, stay in front of trends, and maintain our ability to be stridently flexible.

Hiring
What types of positions do hire young professionals for?

Any of our positions! We have a variety of departments and positions available: operations, safety, accounting/finance, IT, communications/marketing, and more. We’re also firm believers in growth and promotion from within – we call it our “management trainee” program – where you come into our company in one department or position but have the opportunity to learn about our company and the trucking industry from the ground up to get yourself on track for a management position down the road.

What qualities do you look for in a candidate?

We look for candidates with diverse backgrounds; individuals who are team-oriented, take pride in their work, and have strong communication skills. In addition, we look for curiosity and drive: we’d describe our most successful employees as curious and driven, and those characteristics are evident throughout our company on a daily basis.

What benefits do you offer to attract Young Professionals?

We have a complete benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, 401(k) with company match, PTO and holiday pay, and more. We also have a bonus program that our employees typically benefit from twice each year (assuming the company is doing well).

Do you have an internship programs or similar opportunities? If yes, please describe it.

We don’t have a structured internship program in place per say, but we are always open to and can be flexible about creating customized opportunities.
