How would you describe your culture?

CYO’s mission is to change lives through contemporary music and introduce students to careers in the creative arts. We work to build a culture of community and belonging that values inclusion, diversity, equity and integrity. We value shared leadership and offer students opportunities for growth not only in their musicianship but also in their communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills. Through our focus on exclusively contemporary music, CYO seeks to elevate voices who have historically been underrepresented on orchestral stages including composers who identify as women, non-binary, gender-nonconforming, BIPOC, and people with disabilities.

    Hiring
What types of positions do you typically hire young professionals for?

We routinely hire gig musicians, composers and performers. From a staffing perspective, we are very small – we have two full-time positions and 2 part-time positions. If funding became available or student enrollment grew, we would welcome the opportunity to add more staff to our team. If we were to hire new members to our team, we would typically be looking for young professionals with experience in nonprofit administration, arts administration, music education, fundraising or some combination therein.

What qualities do you look for in a candidate?

An ideal candidate enjoys working with students (ages 11-18) and believes that music is a powerful vehicle through which we can cultivate connections between people and communities. They value and embrace the full spectrum of human differences (life experiences, work experiences, perspectives, cultures, ethnicity, gender, age and other aspects of life) and understand that creating and maintaining an inclusive environment is integral to our success. They are flexible, like to have fun, able to work as part of a team, willing to learn and open to new ideas.

What benefits do you offer to attract Young Professionals?

From an employment perspective, we do not offer fringe benefits. Our budget is currently too small, but we are working to address this gap. We do offer a very flexible schedule and remote work environment.

Do you have volunteering or other civic engagement opportunities. If so, please describe.

CYO has a Board of Trustees and is actively seeking members. The Board is an all-volunteer group and is in transition as many of the members are completing consecutive terms. CYO seeks broad representation from the Cleveland community on our Board, particularly from the following sectors: Marketing/Communications, Finance, Legal, Education, Performing Arts.
