Let’s hear from member Chris Nierstheimer.

How long have you lived in Cleveland?

Where are you originally from or where else have you lived?
Portland, Oregon

Why did you choose to move/move back to Cleveland?
I moved to CLE after college, ended up moving out of the state for work, but moved back to CLE a few years later to be closer to friends and family.

Which neighborhood do you currently live in and what are your favorite parts about it?
North Olmsted – it’s so close to everything I need. We are on the border of Fairview and Westlake, so we are right next to a lot of local spots.

What is your favorite part of living in Cleveland?
Lower cost of living as well as frequent, reliable local spots that have been around for years.

How does Cleveland compare to other cities where you’ve lived?
Almost like a tagline – Cleveland: big city feel with a small price tag. It’s nice to see that the city is large enough to function as a jewel on the lake but not so big that it takes an hour to get across town.

Where would you take a newcomer to show them the best that Cleveland has to offer?
Lakewood Park/Solstice Steps, Happy Dog, Mitchells, and Lekko.

What was the most interesting misconception(s) you heard about Cleveland when you lived elsewhere? 
I had heard all the Cleveland jokes before living here but it’s nothing worse than any other city – plenty of suburbs and quirks across downtown, mixed with distinct neighborhoods, to match any specific personality or vibe someone is looking for. I discovered while living here that the city is what you make of it, including what you do and see outside of work. Cleveland has the vibe of offering what you need, when you need it. Like the reviving downtown area is a dream for most cities, but has become a reality for those returning home.  

What would be your message/advice to other emerging professionals thinking of relocating to Cleveland?
I would recommend to learn more about everything that is offered downtown currently. While a large variety of options are focused on entertainment and nightlife, there are plenty of small spots that truly make Cleveland a great place to live without breaking the bank! 

What does Cleveland offer to the emerging professional community that other cities do not?
Cleveland offers professionals a supportive and collaborative community with strong networking opportunities, helping to fuel career growth and mentorship. Also, the cost of living is great compared to many other cities, allowing professionals to stretch their dollars further while still enjoying a high quality of life. Also, Cleveland’s cultural heritage and wide variety of recreational activities provide a unique and fun environment for personal and professional development.

What is your pitch of why other emerging professionals should move to Cleveland in three sentences or less.
Cleveland offers emerging professionals a blend of career opportunities, affordable living, and vibrant cultural experiences. With a diverse range of industries, Cleveland provides ample room for professional growth and overall development. Also, with its thriving arts and culinary scene, as well as access to beautiful natural landscapes, Cleveland offers a high quality of life without the high cost typically associated with larger cities.

What is a hidden gem of Cleveland that you think should go viral?
The Cleveland Cultural Gardens! 

Do you plan to stay in Cleveland in the next 5-10 years? What are you most excited to see in Cleveland in the next five years?
Yes, Additional work to the coastline with the lake for the “shore to core” plan, allowing more access for CLE residents to the waterfront.

What would you tell someone who has a negative view of Cleveland?
I would ask them to give CLE another chance – the city does the same for all of it’s citizens!
